Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine through the urethra.

It is often called the " silent disease " because women who suffer from it rarely speak to your doctor. Yet it is a very common condition that affects about 2 million women in Italy .

Any woman may be subject to urinary incontinence. It is not, in fact, age or type of work or way of life. Incontinence is rather due to causes which may also be transitional .

However, urinary incontinence is presented as a crippling problem , because it prevents the everyday actions and psychologically affects the lives of women who are affected .

Often due to a weakening of the pelvic floor , to a blockage of the urethra or a decrease in the urethral sphincter tone incontinence you can still look for other causes: urinary or vaginal infections , side effects of certain medications, muscle weakness , disease nerve and / or muscle pain, side effects of some surgeries.

Are risk factors also pluriparity ( nearly one-third of pregnant women suffer from urinary incontinence and the risk increases with subsequent parts ) , menopause ( a relaxation of the uterine tissues and a change of the mucosa may lead to incontinence ) , constipation ( chronic constipation has consequences on the pelvic muscles and then directly onto the system of continence ) .

Incontinence occurs in different forms and each of them is identified differently with regard to the symptoms and causes: stress urinary incontinence , urge incontinence , mixed incontinence , overflow incontinence .

If a woman suspected of suffering from urinary incontinence, the first thing to do is go to a specialist ( urologist , usually) . The specialist will prescribe examinations to be performed to know the type of incontinence and the degree that will give a detailed and accurate picture of the situation.

Urinary incontinence can be successfully treated today , often through a combination of several approaches . Surgical therapy , drug therapy and pelvic rehabilitation are the three possible roads that are well articulated in them
